How it started

I am Marcelle, a total pushover when it comes to seniors and animals. Yes, let’s get that out of the way from the get-go…

Family means the world to me.  My gran was the last to pass over, but before she did, she had a few trips to frail care. Whilst visiting her I had the heart-breaking experience of walking past rooms occupied by what I can only describe as lonely, sad, forgotten souls. A sight I will never forget. That was the day I made a promise to my God that I would do as much as possible to make their days easier and possibly more enjoyable.

I realised that our older generations have an insane fear of being a burden and worse, being forgotten.

My biggest problem was trying to find a way to make that difference. And those that know me know, when I do something, I GO BIG OR STAY HOME.

It all started when I became a Rotarian in 2016.  Now I had a team to help me make that difference. And so, the Blankets for Cold Bones Initiative was born.

With an initial project I convened through the Rotary Club of Worcester the funds collected were used to purchase care parcels from DisChem in Worcester at a reduced rate. Winelands Textiles came on “board” excuse the pun and sponsored more than 200 blankets.

These were distributed to a church group in Worcester that serves the greater senior community.

Side bar… I have always wanted to play golf, but never plucked up the courage to do so. I mentioned this in passing to a few of my lady friends one evening and when they agreed that they felt the same, an idea was born.

Why not have the very first golf day in Worcester’s history that caters specifically for ladies that CANNOT play golf? And in turn make it a worthy endeavour and link it to the Blankets for Cold Bones initiative?

Three GiGi’s later… and growing every year.
